I just finished reading What Is Left The Daughter by Norman Howard, who has written several bestsellers and won numerous awards. It was a very good read and I highly recommend it. I liked Howard's writing style so much that I'll definitely be checking out his other books. Howard writes in a very straight-forward manner yet his characters seem very real and developed. I found myself sympathizing and relating to all of his characters. The story takes place in Nova Scotia (much during World War II) as a father writes his daughter a long letter of confession.
This morning I began Bloodroot by Amy Greene. I've only barely started this story but I LOVE it already. I'll definitely be up in the wee hours tonight reading this one. Love the use of the mountain language by Greene who tells the story of a family living in the Smoky Mountains (which just happens to be a place I VERY much want to visit someday soon). The time span of this story goes back as far as the Great Depression. I'll write again when I finish, but I'm sure that I'll be devouring this one!
p.s. You may notice that I'm using the Kindle images of the book covers. After a lot of fighting the urge, I finally gave in last September and bought a Kindle (the latest version). I love it!!! Now I still miss holding an actual book, and I don't think I will ever stop missing that tactile sensation ... but there is nothing like carrying ten books in a device that weighs much less than a pound and fits very nicely in my bag. Worth every penny - even though I probably do spend a lot more on books now too. (Gosh I hope hubby doesn't start reading my blog!)
